–       Student Speaker Contest was last Monday, March 9th at Los Gatos Lodge. Sophomore from Cupertino High School won. Our contestant, Grace Zhou did well. We invited her to a future PM meeting.

–       Flag Day at Sutter School last Wednesday, March 11th. There were 56 students from two 3rd grade classes. Lions Mort, Ann and Walt participated.

  • Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters is teaming up with District 4C6 to provide couriers for the General Election coming up on Tuesday, June 2nd.
  • Need to let Lion Walt know by March 15th if you are interested in participating. District 4C6 will need a count of those interested by that date.
  • Couriers are needed to bring ballots from the election booths to election headquarters in San Jose.

  • Sue Guzman, 14-year veteran of Canine Companions was guest speaker. Chapters provide service dogs for people with disabilities.
  • Service dogs provide physical help to those who are disabled.
  • They have an annual event each year to raise money at Memorial Park, Cupertino and are looking for volunteers who can help.

Golf Tournament

–       Need to line up sponsors. We have received $876 in donations so far.

–       Joe Preston, president of Lions Clubs International may be joining us.

–       Moffett Field Golf Course is in good shape.

–       See Lion Steve for fliers and entry forms.

–       Work party will be on June 11th.

Crab Feed Review

–       Lion Jim had a meeting with Regional representative of Fish Market.

–       The cost that we paid for the crab was what the same price they paid for it. No markup.

–       The Fish Market and its employees enjoy being a part of our Crab Feed. Good PR and positive feed back.

–       Unfortunately, this years Crab Feed left us with a $6600 shortfall.

–       Zone Student Speaker Contest is this Monday, March 9th, 7 pm at Los Gatos Lodge, 50 Saratoga Ave, Los Gatos. Our club winner, Grace Zhou will be participating.

–       Our club has signed up a new member, Jerry Tammi

–       Sue Chen, a District Executive with the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council of Boy Scouts of America visited our meeting. She would like to return in the near future and talk to our club regarding their upcoming breakfast which supports Scouts. The breakfast will be on March 31, 2015.

–       Many Happy Dollars were given for the return of Lions Dagi, Mort, and Eli. Lion John S donated for the quick sale of his home. We will miss John and wife Carmel when they leave. Both have contributed much time and effort to our club activities over many, many years.

Crab Feed Review

–       There was a post mortem meeting on the crab feed last Tuesday. Lion Jim will go to Fish Market and talk to Dwight about why the cost of food was twice what we paid for last year. Our net, $6,600 translates to only 33% profit from gross revenue. Lion Eli suggested we consider having a Corn Beef and Cabbage dinner instead next year.

Fundraiser Opportunity

  • Lion Carl has built a race car track for his students. Cars are made of paper and have to carry an egg.
  • Lion Steve helped build an electronic timer for the event.

Financial Review: Crab Feed

–       Bill for food from Fish Market was double that of last year.

–       Net was only $6,602.79 or approximately 30% net for our efforts.

–       May need to find another provider. We paid $13.50 per lb for fresh crab. It was very good. Cupertino Rotary paid $5.75 lb, not as good but more profitable.

–       There will be a post mortem on crab feed then we will need to discuss costs with Fish Market.

Activities Review

–       Student Speaker contest very successful. Thanks to all who helped.

  • Winner was Grace Zhou a freshman from Monta Vista High School.
  • She has accepted our invitation to come to next PM meeting on Mar 4th.

–       Financially she is making a little more than current limit however with high cost of living here, we think that she is deserving.

–       All of the bills are not in yet. However expenses a lot higher than last year.

  • Fish Market $18,892 for 1,345 lbs of crab @ $13.50 lb,sauces, bibs, etc.
  • Cost of garbage up $150 and refrigerated truck up $350.

–       Discussed ways to improve profits.

  • Buy frozen rather than fresh crab.
  • Purchase crab from different supplier.
  • Find another venue possibly in Cupertino.

–       Some of our Lions attending the Cupertino Rotary Crab Feed this week will check with Cupertino Rotary to compare what they pay for crab, location, etc with what we are paying.

–       Lion Dagi’s mom is now settled in a care facility. Lion Dagi plans to be back next week. We wish her a safe trip.

–       Lion Phil brought in a Lion’s Brag Board from 2007. How young everyone looked.

–       Benevity program: We should approach Apple to see about donations or sponsorship. They need to improve their public image because their expansion has caused a lot of concern over traffic and need for more high density housing.

–       Edge Youth Leadership program is having their Founders’ Gala on Saturday, February 21st. Tickets at $50. See Lion Walt for details.

–       2nd VDG Barbara Chamberlain sent a note says she and Lions David & Barry had a good time during their recent visit to the PM meeting. A copy of the note is attached.

2nd Vice District Governor Barbara Chamberlain and three others attended from the

Cabrillo Host club.

–       Golf tournament next year will be on June 13th at Moffett Field. A motion was made

and approved to raise the price of the golf tournament next year to $120 or $130 if not paid by deadline.

–       Crab Feed had 587 people paid. Income above budget. However expenses were higher

than normal. Cost of crab $13.50/lb. We had to pay for everything from Fish Market. May have only net around $14,000 total

–       Need judges, tellers, and assistance from Lions for various odd jobs.

Future Volunteer Opportunities via Union Church of Cupertino

–       Mark, pastor of the Union Church does a lot of outreach work.

–       We may be able to link up with him on other projects.

–       Has shown some interest in coming a lion.

Club Communication Improvements

–       Our Lions club now has a Facebook page. Good opportunity to get our message out to the public.

–       More information on location and access will be coming. May need to be a Facebook user to have access.

Leos, LCIF, & Special Olympics

–       LCIF has invited our Leos to participate in the Special Olympics this March or April.

–       We are checking with LCIF to see if they will provide any financial support.

VDG Lion Jan Miller’s Special Cause Event

–       Lions Eyes Across California is a one-day program, March 28th to increase awareness of Lions eyeglass collection program.

–       To increase awareness, our club will send out emails to all crab feed participants asking them to bring in eyeglasses on the night of the crab feed.

–       VDG Jan Miller will be at A.M. meeting this Thursday.

Other Charity/Foundation Updates

–       Project Linus will be on March 5th at the Odd Fellows Hall. This is the 5th annual event.

–       Lion Leslye says they would like to increase the event to twice a year.

Other Club Updates

–       Friends of Vijay have donated $150 to our Lions Club in honor of his marriage.

–       Bingo schedule is now posted on our website.
