Type: Board Meeting

Meeting Date: Tuesday 17 February 2016

Meeting Time: 7:30 pm

Location Knox Compound

Members Present: Lions Amy, Al, Bill, Phil, Ray, and Walt

In the absence of Lion Prez Jeff and Lion Carl, Lion Amy presided over the Board.

  1. Fiscal Review – Crab Feed: Lion Al presented the 2016 Annual Crab Feed Budget Performance Review to the Board. The Board passed it as presented. Cupertino DeAnza Lions share of the net profit was $7,778.03. The Board then discussed whether our club should partner again with Sunnyvale Sunrise Rotary Club or prefer to go it alone next year. One of the primary concerns of going it alone was whether we have the personal to handle all of the tasks.
  1. Mobile Credit Card Acceptance – Lion Al presented information to the Board on two of the mobile credit card plans, First Data and PayPal. The question was asked whether or not it was worth buying into one of the systems. It was decided it would be a good idea to be able to use a mobile credit card system for both the Crab Feed and Golf Tournament and it could be used to pay Lions quarterly dues. No decision was made although the Board liked the idea.
  1. Golf Tournament – The tournament will be on June 18th at Moffett Field. A planning meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, February 23rd at 4:30 pm. It will be at Lion Amy’s home, 1953 Bohannon Dr in Santa Clara. Please let her know if you would like to attend. The question came up as to why we cannot provide the beer. She said it is an insurance issue; people are worried about consumption.
  1. Saratoga Lions – Lion Al said at one time he discussed with the Saratoga Lions their fundraising programs. They told him they do a solicitation from the local merchants and were able to raise $25,000 – $27,000. Something for us to consider.
  1. Camp Via – Lion Amy mentioned a high special needs 8th grader from a family with a high special needs father told her how special it was to be able to attend Camp Via. The Board thought it might be nice to pay the way for a deserving student in the future if the situation arises.

Lions Present: Ray, Walt, Steve, Bill, Don, Al, Dagi, Eli, Herb, Kent, John N, Ron, and Charlie.

Dates to Remember

–      Feb 16th, Board Meeting, TBA

–      Mar 19th, Charter Night, Blue Pheasant, 22100 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino

–      June 18th, De Anza Lions Golf Fundraiser, Moffett Field

Tail Twister Lion Herb went around the room collecting happy dollars. Several were given for a successful Student Speaker Contest. Lion Ron was happy to fill his car up with $1.99 gas.

Student Speaker Contest

The contest was held last Thursday night at the Odd Fellows Hall. There were three contestants from Cupertino, Homestead, and Monta Vista high schools. All did well. The winner was Shankara Srinkantan, a junior at Cupertino HS. Date and location of the Zone level contest has not been announced. Thanks to all who volunteered to help and especially Lion Don for allowing us to use the Odd Fellows Hall.

Charter Night

Event will be held on March 19th at the Blue Pheasant in Cupertino.  Menu will be the same as last year. Lion Ray wants to get some longer term Lions to speak about how the perspective of our group has changed over the years. He plans to get out more information this week.

Crab Feed

Lion Al said all the bills are in except for the credit card customers. Looks like we will net around $7,000. Our club will need to decide whether we want to continue to partner with Sunnyvale Sunrise Rotary Club or find some other organization. One possibility would be Cupertino Host Lions. This is something we can discuss at the board meeting next week. There will be a committee meeting with Sunnyvale Sunrise sometime after the board meeting.

Golf Tournament

We are waiting for Lion Amy to set up the first golf tournament meeting. Last year there were too many people talking to the golf course people at Moffett Field. This year we should channel information through one or two. Need to discuss with Moffett Field whether we can bring our own beer and just pay them a fee or if they insist on providing all the beer.

Good of the Order

Bicycle Fundraiser: Lion Ken will be meeting with the Diabetes Association on Tuesday. They are very interested in partnering with us if we decide to sponsor a bicycle fundraising event.

Correspondence:

1) A thank you letter was received from the YWCA for our cash donation on behalf of the Golden Gate Street Machine Club. The motorcycle club had made a cash donation to our food drive.

2) Canine Companions send us some raffle tickets for their fundraiser drawing. See Lion Al if you want to buy one. Otherwise our club will purchase the tickets.

3) Edge sent us a thank you note for our $400 donation to sponsor two students to their EDGE seminar 2016. Google will match our donation.

Opportunity Drawing

Congratulations to our winner: Lion Eli, again!

Lions Present: Ray, Walt, Phil, Steve, Bill, Don, Al, Dagi, Eli, Herb, Kent, John, Ron, and Charlie.

Dates to Remember

–      Feb 4th, 7 pm, Student Speaker Contest, Odd Fellows Hall, 20589 Homestead Rd, Cupertino.

–      Mar 19th, Charter Night, Blue Pheasant, 22100 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino

–      June 18th, De Anza Lions Golf Fundraiser, Moffett Field

Tail Twister Lion Herb went around the room collecting happy dollars. We were all happy to see the return of Lions Dagi and Eli.

Student Speaker Contest

The contest was held that night, (2/4) at the Old Fellows Hall in Cupertino. Volunteers were asked to be there at 6:15 pm, judges and contestants at 6:30 pm with a draw of cards to determine order speaking at 6:45 pm. Refreshments were provided, and everyone was asked not to bring food or drink into the contest room. Thanks to Lion Don for offering the use of the Hall.

Crab Feed

Lion Al said he thinks we will do marginally better than last year. The bill from the Fish Market was about $1,500 less than last year. Attendance was down 25% and silent action down 45%. We are considering severing ties with the Sunnyvale Sunrise Rotary Club. Lion Eli thought since the cost of the crab is so variable and likely to increase over time that we should consider having a corn beef and cabbage dinner instead.

Review of the Board Meeting

Kudo’s to Lion Carl for running the pm meeting in lieu of Lion Prez Jeff. Lion Howie will be moving into a new place on Monday.

A distinguished service award was given to Alan and Diana, owners of Tony and Alba’s for allowing us to use their facility for our PM meetings. We also gave a distinguished service award to Lion Yvonne to present to her car club for their help during the food drive.

Charter night is March 19th at the Blue Pheasant in Cupertino.

The Buchser Middle School Career Faire will be on May 15th. They are looking for Lion volunteers and people interested in having career booths.

Flag Day will be on May 17th at Sutter School.

Good of the Order

Lion Kent is pursuing the possibility of our club having a bike ride fundraiser. It could be very profitable. We could work with American Diabetes Association. They know all the ins and outs. Donations could then be split with half going to ADA and the rest to our club. We could partner with Monta Vista High School and use their facilities as a staging area. A good place to run the ride would be along Stevens Creek Canyon Road. More ideas and details to follow.

We received two thank you letters in the mail, one from the Santa Clara Blind Center thanking us for our $1000 donation. The other was from Wounded Warriors for our $500 donation.

Bingo: The Blind Center will no longer be doing bingo.

Opportunity Drawing

Congratulations to our winner, Lion Eli.

Our thanks to all the Lion volunteers who have donated time and efforts in support of the program over the last few decades.

Review of the Board Meeting

Status of Prez Jeff: Lion Howie and his wife, Kathy are continuing to need full time care. This has resulted in a fulltime effort for Lion Prez Jeff and Lion Scott. The family is looking to find a place where Lion Howie and Kathy can be together. The Board would like to invite Lion Prez Jeff to the next board meeting to discuss Lion Jeff’s long-term situation. For the present time Lion Carl will continue to fill in as club president.

Charter Night: A proposal was passed to increase the budget for Charter Night from $100 to $500. The extra money will go to paying the cost of guest meals, meal tip, having a bar in the room, kids and the Leos meals.

Crab Feed: See item below.

Other Club Updates – Student Speaker Contest: A request to send a student from Delmar High School in Campbell to our contest was turned down because the school was not within the boundaries of the Fremont Union High School District. The contest is on February 4th at the Odd Fellow Hall. Volunteers are still needed. Contact Lions Walt or Dagi if you would like to help.

Crab Feed

As of the Board meeting last Tuesday we had sold 377 tickets. Lion Al anticipates that we will sell approximately 400 tickets this year. Those wishing to buy tickets last minute are urged to use Pay Pal. Anyone interested in requesting a large orders of tickets last minute should contact Lion Jim. The Firehouse is donating the beer and jockey box this year. Many volunteer sign up slots are still unfilled. Help is especially needed in the kitchen. Thank You Letter: West Valley Community Services has sent us a thank you letter for our recent $250 donation. Our gift helps them provide those living in the communities of Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, West San Jose and the surrounding mountain areas with basic needs.

He is looking into parking it at Bucher Middle School instead.

PM Meeting Review with AM Meeting Updates

Lion Carl filled in for Lion Prez Jeff who is attending to his dad, Lion Howie Ludlum. At the AM meeting Lion Mort said she would send a Get Well card to Lion Howie on our behalf.

Flag Day: Lion Mort reported that there will be a flag day presentation at Sutter School on May 17th. Please let her know if you would like to help out.

Charter Night: Based on the feedback from our Lions group, it appears the date for Charter Night will be on March 19th. Cost has increased a few dollars but is still the best deal in town. The club will invite Charlotte Chastain and Marge Gilbert. Lion Kent will see about getting 3-4 Leos to assist with babysitting.

Crab Feed:  Lion Jim said the Fish Market told him they are now getting whole crab at $6 lb or $10.50 in clean clusters. The crab is coming in from Washington, Oregon and Southern California. There is concern that the large waves and frequent storms may keep the crab boats from going out and therefore drive up the price of crab.

Lion Al said 200 tickets have been sold overall and expects that our club will likely sell 400. Everyone needs to get the word out to friends that the crab feed is on, that we are getting the best of the crab from Fish Market and that it is safe to eat. Please encourage your friends to buy tickets. If buying tickets, let Lion Al know as soon as possible. Pay through Pay Pal or send Lion Al a check.

Lion Steve is looking for volunteers to pick lemons from his tree a few days before the crab feed. Let him know if you are interested.

Good of the Order

Lion Eli and some AM volunteers will be getting the propane tanks out of storage and filling them up today.

Food Drive: Thank you notes from the food drive were passed around at the PM meeting and will be given to Lions Yvonne and Dan to show their Car Club friends. A check for $782 was sent to the YWCA from the surplus funds of the food drive.

Peace Poster contest kits go on sale on January 15th, cost is $11.95 plus shipping. Notify Lion Walt if you are interested in having one ordered.

Student Speaker Contest: Lion Dagi has indicated that two schools have responded with the name of a speaker. Two of the judges from last year will not be able to return. We are looking for replacements. Please advice Lion Walt or Lion Dagi if you know of anyone. The Student Speaker Contest will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in the smaller of the two rooms. No food or drink will be allowed in that room although refreshments will be served in the lobby. Special thanks to Lion Don for making the room available to us.

With a smile on his face, Lion Steve announced his 49th Wedding Anniversary and made a donation. Happy Anniversary Lion Steve and Ellen!

Crab Feed

Lion Jim said the Fish Market told him there would be no crab before Christmas. However everyone is still somewhat optimistic we will have a shortened crab season. The many storms that have moved into the Pacific Northwest and Northern California are gradually cooling the ocean waters.

As of now the Crab Feed is on. Get your money in as soon as possible and invite your friends to come. For large groups of 8 or more from last year, Lion Al is holding on to reservations as long as seats are available. If there is no crab, the money will be refunded.

Lion Mort asked that the Coppe-Eliason group get their money in as soon as possible.

The next Crab Feed meeting is scheduled for 7 pm on December 28th at Tu Mero Mole Restaurant, 590 Old San Francisco Rd, Sunnyvale.

Board Meeting

Food Drive: The AM club is recommending that the Board reconsider where the left over donated money from the Food Drive should go. We think it should be given to the YWCA.

Several Thank You notes were received from the recipients of the YWCA and a Thank You letter of appreciation from Hope’s Corner.

Eyeglass Collection: Last Tuesday Lions Dagi and Eli brought 3,435 pair of eyeglasses to the collection center in Vallejo. Lion John Smith met them there. He would like to setup a collection program for Santa Rosa Lions Club similar to ours. It appeared to Lion Eli and Dagi that the people running the program were getting on in age and could use some help. The Lions Club that was running the program has disbanded. Lion Ray offered to contact DG Jan Miller and Los Gatos Lions Club to see what Lions of our District can do to help.

Eagle Scout Collection Project: Lions Steve and Ray have agreed to provide the 3 collection boxes to Scout Amod.

Good of the Order

AM Meeting Schedule: There will be no AM meetings on December 24th or December 31st. The next schedule AM meeting will be on January 7th. Best wishes to all for a Happy Holiday Season!

Appreciation: Lion Phil presented Christmas cards and our donation to our servers at Holders, Lenora and Roberto. See attached photo. They do an outstanding job of taking care of us each week.

Dates to Remember

–      Dec 15th, 7:30 pm, Board Meeting, TBD.

–      Dec 21st, 5:30 8:30 pm, Bingo, 2120 Walsh Ave, Santa Clara, Lions Ray & Ron

–      Jan 23rd, 20th Annual Crab Feed, St Williams Church, 611 S El Monte Ave, LA

–      Feb 4th, 7 pm, Student Speaker Contest, Odd Fellows Hall, 20589 Homestead Rd, Cupertino.

–      TBD Charter Night

Tail Twister Happy Dollars were given for the return of Lion Steve and the Christmas Party and Food Drive.

Christmas Party

Everyone seemed to agree the Christmas Party was a big success. There was a good turnout with about 50+ people. There was plenty of good food. Special thanks to Barb Knox and her crew for taking charge, Lion Don for allowing us to use the Odd Fellow’s Hall, Lion Steve and Ellen for donating the wine and…the Blue bells and singers for keeping us on key during the songs.

Crab Feed

As of this date the crab feed is still on. We hope to have an update after the Board Meeting on Tuesday night, Dec 15th. The deadline for turning in money for those having reservations has been extended until Dec 17th. Cupertino Rotary is having their crab feed on January 29th.

Today Lion Steve received 4 “Hopper Tickets” to Disneyland worth $155 each. Southwest Airlines has turned down his request for a donation but they usually donate every other year.

Good of the Order

AM Meeting Schedule: Because of the Christmas and New Years holidays, our AM meeting on December 17th will be the last of the year. Next meeting thereafter will be January 7, 2016.

Food Drive: The food drive was one of the most successful for us ever. We are left with $1200 cash. Plans on what to do with the money will be an agenda item for the Dec 15th Board Meeting.

We were not able to rent a refrigerated truck this year. Instead we ended up renting a truck and using dry ice to keep everything cold.

Eyeglasses: Lion Eli reported that he and Lion Dagi would be going to Vallejo on Tuesday to deliver eyeglasses. The eyeglass center has reported they are running a shortage of 1 million pair.

The question came up as whether used eyeglasses can be used in the USA. The only state that allows their use is Arizona. Apparently the optometrist lobby will not allow them to be reused in other states.

Charter Night: Lion Ray says he wants to have Charter Night near the end of February or in March. He will check with our Lion club teachers first to determine when they will be off work. In the past when the teachers have been on holiday break they have not been available for Charter Night.

Website Update: Lion John thanked Lion Dagi for all the work she has done to update our Lions Club web page.

Student Speaker: Student speaker contest pamphlets have been mailed out to each of the high schools in the Fremont Union High School District. Monta Vista High School has already selected Grace Zhou to represent their school. Ms. Zhou won our contest last year. A check of the rules shows she can reapply this year.

Flag Day: Lion Mort reported the next Flag Day ceremony would be at Sutter School in May. We will also sponsor a hotdog picnic for the 3rd graders at Hughes School near the end of the school year.

Opportunity Drawing – Congratulations to our winner, Lion Kent. Thank you Lion Kent for donating your winnings to our Lion’s Club.
