PM Meeting Review-

Congratulations to the three new Melvin Jones Award recipients – Lion’s Pat Coppe, Jenni Erickson, and Jill Eliason.

Presentation by Destination Home with Ray Bramson – Destination Home has been an organization since 2015 helping to find housing for families in need and keeping families in homes, and creating low income homes for those who need, as well. They act as a convener, funder, and a leader in the fight against those without a home. Destination Homes’s focus is in Santa Clara County. With largely corporate and non-profit support, Destination Home is helping serve 12-13,00 households of 65,000 that are currently in need.
Updating Club By-Laws – Thank you to Lion’s Claire and Al who have worked tirelessly to revise these bylaws.  The notice of voting was distributed by email and by regular mail from Lion Leslye. We had a quorum of 25 of 45 members, and needed a majority to adopt. The VOTE was: 24 aye, 0 nay, 1 abstention. Bylaws Accepted.

Special Club Presentations/Announcements –

Milestone Chevron Award for 15 years: Lion Herb Yeary!
Centennial Lions Club Award: for members who have brought in other members who have stayed for 2-3 years. Lion Kent is the recipient of the gold centennial award. Lion Claire received the gold and the diamond centennial.
The Key Award goes to Lion Liang for bringing in at least two people into the club.

Camp Via West – Lion Joan contacted Rick at Camp Via West and talked to him about the Green House. She will follow up and get the particulars about us utilizing it for the camp. Lion Eli suggested that we build a train platform in the lunch room for the kids. Lion Steve thought that was a good idea supported by the Lions donation. Lion Bill said he would talk with Rick to see if that was something they would like to have.

Destination Home – Lion’s Ray , Joan , and Steve talked about our support of the project in the Cupertino area. It was suggested that we go to the City Council to promote the idea and to see if we might get the Cupertino Rotary to join in with us. Lion Ray said he would talk with District Governor Rick Silveria to see if
District MD-4 would be interested in participating in the project also.

Good of the Order – Lion Ray talked about attending the District 4C6 Awards banquet on Sunday June 20, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Hayes Mansion in San Jose. Lion’s. Al and Leslye said they would be interested in attending also.

Lion Al said he had sent the check for the club to attend the District Convention.
He said he had not received the check back yet since the Convention was cancelled due to the Coronavirus.

Camp Via West Work Party – Lion Bill organized the work party and we had Lion’s Dagi, Joan, Al, Ray, Ron, Bill and Lion Bill’s son Patrick were there on Friday. Lions Dagi and Joan spruced up the camp by cleaning up around the main buildings. On Saturday Lion Prez Jeff, Bill, Dagi, Joan, Ray, and Ron were mowing/clearing the hill sides of the tall grass and cleared one tree that had fallen across one of the access roads. Lion Joan had brought some plants from her garden at home and her and Lion Dagi planted them around the main area, it looked beautiful. After that they continued clearing other areas of the main camp of weeds. Everyone worked hard and felt a great deal of accomplishment. Lion Joan stated that we need more Lions signage at the camp we will look into getting signage to place around Camp Via.

Board Meeting –

Lion Leslye said the next Canine Companion graduation is August 14, 2020. Hopefully we will be able to attend.

Lion Al said we have $6,000 to disperse for this fiscal year, between the fact that we are waiting for some billings and money we have not designated. In June, Al will check on those billings. For Camp Via, we have funds left over that we didn’t spend on materials for upkeep as we usually do and possibly we could donate if they have a need. We have already sent Via $1,500 dollars towards camperships.
The next scheduled Budget Meeting for 2020/21 budget is scheduled for Saturday June 27, at 1:00 pm. We will have to wait for clarity on if we can meet in person or via Zoom. Jeff will send out the date and tell members to come to advocate for their charities. Al will send it out earlier for review, and members could also submit in writing their thoughts and their advocacies if they cannot be there. The chairpeople for our fundraising events should prepare their budgets for the meeting: Golf Tournament, Food Drive, Crab Feed, Ride for Diabetes, and then another golf tournament in June 2021 (same fiscal year).
Charity Golf Tournament Saturday, August 29th pending any social distancing requirements. Can we ask Ray and Ron to attend the next board meeting. We must think of where we are with our usual plan vs. what might happen with COVID -19 restrictions. Moffett is not yet open, like some other golf courses. We could ask for donations in place of the event, but make it more meaningful to direct the funds to supporting those affected by COVID-19, or another direct charity.

Good of the Order – Lion Leslye said the next Canine Companion graduation is August 14, 2020. Hopefully we will be able to attend.

Lion Steve said we had not heard back from “Destination Home” to see if they want to give us a presentation at the next P.M. meeting. Project Destination Home works with another charity organization, Abode Services to support those in need.

Minutes:
Call to Order – Lion Jeff at 6:35
Flag Salute – “Lions-to-Be”
Presentation: Destination Home with Ray Bramson: An organization since 2015 helping with finding housing for families in need and keeping families in homes, and creating low income homes for those who need, as well. They act as a convener, funder, and a leader in the fight against those without a home. They are aware and working with those in encampments. The building/acquiring of housing takes quite a bit of time and the need is growing. The county has added 1,000 new shelter beds, including Motel 6s and County Fairgrounds. What is holding back those who are homeless from getting into a safe space? Right now they are leaving some units open to those that are considered “vulnerable” to the virus. What kind of donations, if any, are they looking for? Monetary donations are always great, but voicing the need for housing, especially by local clubs like Lions, has power especially when support is needed for low income housing. This group’s focus is in Santa Clara County. With largely corporate and non-profit support, Destination Home is helping serve 12-13,00 households of 65,000 that are currently in need.
Final Comments and Updating Club By-Laws. Thank you to Claire and Al who have worked tirelessly to revise these bylaws. The notice of voting was distributed by email and by regular mail. Vote called for adopting the new bylaws. We have a quorum of 25 of 45 members, and need a majority to adopt:
VOTE: 24 aye, 0 nay, 1 abstention.
Bylaws Accepted
4) Special Club Presentations/Announcements:
Milestone Chevron Award for 35 years: Lion Eli! Pat comments on his outstanding Lionism and Cupertino Citizen, as well as a wonderful neighbor. We all love him. He puts his heart and soul into something 100%, especially every Lion.
Milestone Chevron Award for 15 years: Lion Herb Yeary! Lion Eli comments that if you ever need anything, Herb has it in his garage. Herb is involved in so much and has fun doing it.
Centennial Lions Club Award: for members who have brought in other members who have stayed for 2-3 years. Lion Kent is the recipient of the gold centennial award. Lion Claire received the gold and the diamond centennial.
Lion Herb can then put the cool patch on the banner, too, for recognition as a premier Lions Club.
The Key Award goes to Lion Liang for bringing in at least two people into the club.
Melvin Jones Fellow Award goes to Pat Coppe, joining in 2009, for all her amazing support and dedication to the events!
Melvin Jones Fellow Award joining in 2006, organizer and officer, Jill Eliason.
Melvin Jones Fellow Award joining in 2006: Jennifer Erickson, who works in every corner of our Lions Club.
Special Visit to Lion John Smith’s Personal Photo Archive & Reflections: shared a wonderful slide show, since he is clearing out some pictures as he moves back to the South Bay, so he has offered to share these with us. What a wonderful walk through history of our club-thank you so much, Lion John Smith!
Good of the Pride, Any Lion: Lion Eli thinks we need Melvin Jones celebration at a winery-all invited- a social event as soon as we can needs to happen, at Leslye’s and Steve and Ellen will supply the wine.

Meeting Adjourned: 7:34.

Guidelines for By-laws Vote
1. Is a quorum of 45 people, 22 or 23 people? (half is 22.5) 23
2. Do the bylaws pass with a majority or a 2/3 of the quorum? The current bylaws don’t include a specific provision regarding amendment of the bylaws. In the new bylaws, a 2/3 vote is required for amendment, but those bylaws have not yet been adopted so don’t apply in this process. Since the default voting threshold is majority, that is the process we are using for this vote: a majority of votes in a meeting where a quorum is present. Therefore, we need 23 people present, and 12 of those need to vote yes, in order for the vote to pass.

3. If it is majority, then we would need 16.5 vote for majority of 23 (so really 17). See 2. above.
4. If it is a 2/3 needing to pass then it’s 15.3 (so is that 15 or 16) votes for 2/3 of 23? See 2. above.

Why we do it? WE SERVE: AJ Robinson Mobile Health Screening Services, Flag Days, Via West Camp (Costanoan), Project Linus, eye exams & glasses, THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE, Eye glasses recycling and other charitable causes in our community and around the world. Bravo, Lions of De Anza, BRAVO!

Remaining Donations, This Lion Year: We have 6,000 to disperse for this fiscal year, between the fact that we are waiting for some billings and money we have not designated. In June, Al will check on those billings. For Camp Via, we have funds left over that we didn’t spend on materials for upkeep as we usually do and possibly we could donate if they have a need. We have already sent Via $1,500 dollars towards camperships.
Schedule Budget Meeting, Lion Year 2020/21: June 27, Saturday, at 1:00 pm. We will have to wait for clarity on if we can meet in person or virtual. Jeff will send out the date and tell members to come to advocate for their charities. Al will send it out earlier for review, and members could also submit in writing their thoughts and their advocacies if they cannot be there. The chairpeople for our fundraising events should prepare their budgets for the meeting: Golf Tournament, Food Drive, Crab Feed, Ride for Diabetes, and then possibly in June Golf Tourney (same fiscal year).
Charity Golf, 2020; Saturday, August 29th and pending any social distancing requirements.
Ride for Diabetes Survey: Jeff will ask Sudha to attend the next board meeting as they are thinking to have the ride at the end of September 25, 2021. Google form survey went out and she had feedback that she summarized to Jeff. If you didn’t say you participated in the ride part of the event, the survey would not let you continue. A survey should be given much earlier after the event as a guideline for moving forward.
Special Presentations at June PM Meeting via ZOOM – encouraging all to attend, Lion John Smith will attend with a photo presentation.
Good of the Pride-
Bylaw voting: has to be at a meeting where we have a quorum of the members, 50%, so Claire thinks we could do it electronically because of our situation OR a special meeting on ZOOM. We will do it at the June PM meeting. We will give notice that we will get a vote. Leslie will send it out by mail on Friday.
Food Drive/Crab Feed: donation is tied together for the $1500.00 Disneyland donation.
Lions need to be added to our club listserve, check for updates, because not everyone is getting the emails.
Canine Companions: August 14th is the next date for puppy graduations and we are penciled in to attend.

TailTwister – No Tail twister today Lion Herb could not find his toilet, sounds like a personal problem to me.

Camp Via West Work Party – Lion Bill said he talked with Rick at Camp Via West and he has a project for us to work on. They need to do a 30 foot clearance around the camp for a fire break. Rick said that he has all the tools, lawn mowers and weed wackers. Lion Bill said he had two mowers that he could bring. Lion Steve said he had a weed walker with a 100 foot extension cord, Lion Ron said he would pick it up from Lion Steve. Currently we have Lion’s Ray, Bill, Al, Dagi, Joan, and Ron for Friday. On Saturday we have Lion’s Ray, Bill, Jeff, Joan, Dagi, and Ron scheduled at this time.

Golf Tournament – Lion Ray said he has rescheduled the Golf Tournament for August 29, 2020. The opening is dependent on the golf course being ready and the County of Santa Clara Coronavirus Guidelines. If this date does not work we can look at scheduling it in October as all the dates in September are already taken. Lion Steve said he gave up on the mass mailing software that he was using as the company was not responding to his requests to help resolve his issues with the new software. Lion Steve said he is trying a new vendor and if it works the annual cost of the software is $168. Lion Ron suggested that if the software works that we purchase it and use it for both mass mailings, the golf tournament and the crab feed. Lion Al said we could split the annual cost of the software between the two projects and pay for it out of their budgets.

Good of the Order – Lion Eli suggested that we have a combined AM/PM meeting on June 3, 2020 at 6:30 PM. Lion Eli researched Destination Home and thought it would be a good service that we might want to hep support. If you would like to know about this organization you can go to their website (destinationhomesv.org). Lion Steve’s wife Ellen said she talked to the Destination Home representative and they could give us a presentation on our ZOOM meeting on June 3, 2020. PM Meeting Review –

Update from DG Rick Silviera and Linda Pugliese: visits and describes the voting for our district in the convention. There is a plan for a gathering discussing important topics and Awards Ceremony, June 20th-tentative date at Hayes Mansion @ 11:00 AM. Linda is working on the district installation of officers on July 18th in the evening in San Jose. Look for info on the North American Membership Initiative as a plan for district growth for the next three years.
Board Highlights: letter of support for Sunnyvale Community Center, West Valley Community Services, and Community Seva donation during COVID-19, we are successful, but also need to be somewhat prudent with our fundraisers possibly being postponed or cancelled.
Discussion on Homeless Donation: in comment to Board highlights, some want to help homeless get off the street and into housing, rather than enabling homeless to stay on the street. The question is where do we as a club want to put our money when we are helping the homeless, maybe families and students should be our focus. Board should have a conversation about the stance. Destination Homes is one organization that might be interesting to hear from. Maybe we look at who we already serve and what they need and then we see how we can continually or further help those people we have already confirmed are in need.
Pandemic Responses: (see Board highlights) we have responded with donations as stated above in Board Highlights and should react quickly to the immediate need (hourly workers and homeless).
Guest Speaker Ideas: diversify who we have come and share to the club, for example Via West Rep or someone who can come and help us understand current affairs, like the homeless situation.
Busy Calendar Suspended: rescheduled date to August 29th for Golf Tourney. Suggestion to send a letter to our usual attendees that they may still donate if they choose, but don’t put it on the flyer yet. When we are allowed to get together, we will talk about the Tailtwister Party. Camp Via West email said that work can be done outside up at the camp. Rick Wagoner is the contact and Jeff, with Bill’s help, will further the communication with Via. Watch for possible work party.
Golf Tournament – Lion Ray said the Golf Tournament in June is canceled. Lion Ray said he has reserved August 29, 2020 for the tournament pending Coronavirus guidelines.

Good of the Order – Lion Bill said that Camp Via West needs the weeds chopped down around the camp for fire safety. The date set for Camp Via West work party is Friday May 15th and May 16th starting at 9:00 AM.

Lion Ray and Lion Al talked about a combined meeting with the AM/PM members to hand out awards to deserving club members and checking that everyone is healthy. Lion Ray said he would talk with Lion Al and Lion Prez Jeff to see if they could set it up for this coming Thursday May 14th at 6:30 PM. Look for a notification!!!

Lion Al said we loaned the Monta Vista Leo’s club $300 to make 3-D face shields for first responders.

May 8th Trip to Canine Companions Graduation (Cancelled)
June 20th Annual Charity Golf Tournament (Cancelled)
Ride4Diabetes will be scheduled in 2021
Annual Golf Tournament August 29, 2020

TailTwister – Lion Herb went around virtually and asked everyone to donate. Lion Leslye said she would donate $2 for her grandchild who is 12 months old and just started walking. Lion Ron lost his mind and said he would donate $5 when we returned to normalcy.

Golf Tournament – Lion Ray said the Golf Tournament in June is canceled. Lion Eli said he heard the the golf courses will open Monday May 4, 2020. The opening is dependent on the golf course being ready and the County of Santa Clara Coronavirus Guidelines. Stay tuned for updates. Lion Ray asked everyone about the date in August (29th) or should he look into October since all dates in September are taken. The A.M. club members voted on setting August 29th, 2020 for the Golf Tournament, so Lion Ray said he would contact the Moffett Field Course manager and reserve August 29, 2020 for our tournament. This way if for some reason August 29, 2020 does not work we can still looking October 2020. Lion Steve said he gave up on the mass mailing software that he was using as the company was not responding to his requests to help resolve his issues with the new software. Lion Steve said he would talk with his daughter-in-law about the Mass mailing software she uses and try it. We want to try and get the tournament in this year for fund raising since we do not know what is going to happen in the future fund raising events ie; Crab Feed and Bike Ride. We would schedule the next Golf Tournament for next June 2021 to try and keep some continuity.

Good of the Order – Lion Eli looked into a program called “Destination Home” that was suggested by Lion Steve’s son who works on these types of projects in Alameda County. Lion Eli researched Destination Home and thought it would be a good service that we might want to hep support. If you would like to know about this organization you can go to their website (destinationhomesv.org).
Lion Eli said he would see if one on the members would like to speak to our club.

Lion Joan attended a West Valley Community Services webinar and got some information about that organization. Lion Joan said that the need for support to needy families our community has increased by 300% this year due to the Coronavirus. She said she would see if one on the members would like to speak to our club.

Regular Board Meeting: 6:30pm Tuesday, 21 April 2020
Location: VIRTUAL/CONCALL
Meeting Called By: Lion Jeff Type of Meeting: Business Secretary: Lion Jill

Board Members Attending: Jill, Jeff, Eli, Jen, Al, Leslye, Charles, Claire
DALers: Dagi, Sudha
Guests: Nathan Ganeshan, from Community Seva

Call to Order at 6:35

Approve Minutes, last board meeting; motioned to approve, seconded, and unanimously approved.
Community Seva — Presentation, Special Guest Nathan Ganeshan, founder/president. Mission: feeding the hungry and serving the homeless. Awarded Service Award by state as 2018 Nonprofit of the Year. Persisted through COVID-19, partnering with restaurants. Every cent goes back into their mission, no one is paid. The lunch meals, chargers, etc. especially because of COVID-19 are needed because the homeless do not have access to parks, churches, etc. where they would usually use services there. Supports 8 shelters: 5 in San Jose, 1 in Sunnyvale, 1 in Gilroy, 1 in Fremont. The encampments are a concern because of the diseases and they are growing, especially at 280 and Wolfe. What is the approach to getting the homeless into more safe housing? Some are very worried they will end up in the same position and some take advantage of opportunities. Shelters survive on grants and many of these homeless don’t qualify within the grant. The costs of the individual items vary from 3-10 dollars per item/meal, etc. They support shelters, though, of all kinds: women/children suffering from abuse, families earning an income lower than the basest rent, those with medical issues. Don’t accept any donations in-kind, but masks and shields they are accepting. Do they do any service for college students who are homeless when schools are in session? That is on their plan, but sidelined by COVID, but they plan to go back to their talks with De Anza College and SJSU.
Request for Support, Sunnyvale Community Services, LCI Grant Application: asking for a letter from our club acknowledging this group’s good deeds so they can get a grant for a new location for their meetings. All agree they are a great service organization. Jeff will write the letter.
Club Response to COVID Pandemic via Two Donations: some want to support West Valley Services with the full grant, not Seva but budget for Seva in our annual budget. Discretionary money should be given when needed as long as the organization is vetted. However, we may not have any fundraising events for the next year or more. The need is now for pandemic purposes. Seva also seems like a great organization and what they are doing right now is helping people, regardless of why they are homeless. Steve Ratner’s son is in charge of the homeless issue in Alameda and maybe he would be a good person to hear from. We are not as a club usually involved in the homeless issue, so we are being asked to support one organization which we do regularly (Nuru, New Red Shoes, etc.), rather than such a global issue as homelessness-this is too big an issue to tackle.
Review of Available Funds: Budgeted $23,000 in revenue for the golf tournament and 11,600 expenses. The net loss is 11,000 by not doing the golf tourney by September. We made $7,000 extra on Crab Feed, so that makes us about $4,000 less than we anticipated. We DO have over $100,000 in the bank and we do want to give back, or we will get taxed. The discretionary fund should be 3,900 after donating to the orphanage and the raffle, previously approved.
Discussion/Motion, West Valley Community Services: Eli moves that we give $2,000. No Second. Charles moves to give $750, since we already gave $250, or will, and Eli Seconds the motion. Discussion: none. Vote: 7 ayes, 1 abstention. Motion passed.

Discussion/Motion, Community Seva: Jeff motions that we give Seva $500.00, Claire seconds the motion. Discussion: glad that it’s local support. It’s great to have a connection, and a champion for an organization and they can be part of our regular donation budget. Some members are comfortable with a higher donation. Jeff amends his motion to $1,000. Claire seconds. Vote: 6 ayes, 1 nay, 1 abstention. Motion passes.

2020-2021 Board Members Submitted: officers were entered into LCI by Jill by Apr. 15.

Update: Charity Golf, Bike Ride Events for 2020, golf tourney postponed until possibly September (Date) the Ride will not happen this year, but into 2021. Still hoping for feedback from the Ride committee in order to move forward. We still have money for that event.

Good of the Pride? (new dal_board2020 google group invite sent); vote pins- Al has them. We haven’t spent the remainder of Project Linus funds. We will look at it again at the budget meeting. Status on Lion Sharlene Vigil? Claire reached out and still hasn’t heard. Remove her in good standing.
