Regular Board Meeting: 6:30pm, 15 DECEMBER 2020
Meeting Called By: Lion Jeff Type of Meeting: Business Secretary: Lion Jill
VIRTUAL MEETING SPACE VIA ZOOM:

Meeting Minutes

Board Members: Jeff, Jill, Leslye, Al, Jen, Vijay, Claire
Meeting Called To Order: 6:35 by President Lion Jeff

November Minutes Approval: Unanimously approved.
Food Drive Wrap Up: Last up is delivering grocery gift cards and what we have left is this: if we get an adjustment for a check from Linda’s friends, we will have $850.00, if not it will be $350, but the difference of $500.00 will go directly to West Valley as will the remaining, except for a donation to Maria. Claire will reach out to the San Jose West Valley Club who enthusiastically supported us and do a survey for feedback.
Crab Feed 2021: Can we ask Jenni and Carl to do a dual report for the AM and PM meetings in January. We are pending the cost to us and then promotion to the public. On the calendar for January 23rd. Looking for a plan to set things in motion with volunteers and logistics.
Cupertino Grant for the Ride: We had to give back $8,631.00 because we didn’t have the ride. They allowed us to not pay back what we had spent. There was no previous communication about this from our club and the ride committee to the Cupertino grant committee, which of course was all on hold from the pandemic.
Hunger At Home volunteer event, Jan. 2021: After the visit from Ewell at the PM meeting, there was positive feedback and Claire had a good experience volunteering for the cause. Possible opportunity to help the organization in January, masked safely, for our club.
Good of the Pride:
Lion Al: $15,000 just less than for budgeted disbursements for the year. Any of this group want to have a personal hand in the disbursement? Al reads off the list.
Wordpress Issue: Jill can’t get in to post minutes for the website. Jeff will look into this by communicating with our liaison with WordPress and Dagi. In the meantime, Ron has been kindly posting the minutes for Jill.

prepared goes to hungry people. Started in 2008. They aligned with orgs like Levi Stadium,
Hilton, etc. to train chefs on how to process food for donation. 30k meals a year, 1.2M meals
a year now.
Covid hit, and many co’s and orgs began to call and say they have hundreds of palettes of
food for donation. Hunger at Home pivots to be a production house. 3.2 M meals since
March leveraging the surplus of product available. They also donated 50k bed sheets that
would have gone to the landfill. Sisco and Tailored Farms have donated thousands of
pounds of product to them. The govt is forecasting 50-70% of restaurants will fail in the U.S.
They would love to give tours of their facilities. Food preparation is 7 days / week. 40+ non-

Covid).

– Ride4Diabetes will be scheduled in 2021

Lions Eye Foundation – Lion John Smith and Lion Ray were not able to present the Lions Eye video. They will try next week.

Food Drive – Lion Ray said that we were going to meet today at noon at storage to pick up twelve tables and deliver them to Lion Leslye’s house. Lion Linda said she had $600 in donations for the food drive. Lion Linda suggested that we recognize our donors with some type of thank you.

Camp Via West Garden – Lion Joan said that the Board asked her to write up a blog for other Lions to stay informed of what is happening at the garden and green house.

De Anza Lions Board Meeting Minutes –

Camp Via West: Green House & Garden “Feed the People” Program;  Train Project: Joan reported about the gathering and program as it continues through the winter. No experience needed, Joan encourages anyone who wants to join to do so because there are always projects evolving. Jeff asked if Joan would email her log so the club could see the progress, but only if there is time to do so.

Food Drive 2020:  Lion Al says we have $4,833.00 at this time in donations. Claire is hoping for more cans to come in and they will be delivered to Leslye’s place on Saturday morning and then a team will organize, another team will buy what’s left over as needed. On Monday, a team will deliver the boxes, with the turkeys. The West San Jose Campbell Club has been highly involved and would continue to support any of our fundraisers and Claire said that we as a club would love to help them, too. This connection was made solely by the Nextdoor App. Leslye gave Sherie from CC the flyer and she is gathering items, too. Since we may actually have more money than needed, we could either turn it into gift cards for needy families or donate West Valley Community Services or Sunnyvale Community Services. At West Valley, any money donated by Dec. 31st will be matched by Sobrato (who incidentally the train room is named for at Camp Via West). We are registered through a platform for corporate matching through Benevity, so that is an option if individuals want to donate through that, they can. In the past, we have had members donate and have the company they are working for match the donation. Do we know who donated and from where the donations are coming? Most of the donations are not members and looking at the data following the end of the project to thank them and have a database to use for future fundraising. Sudha is willing to help with that when the time comes. The only unknown is exactly where the turkeys are coming from, looking for the best price. Al can issue a corporate check if we know the amount that the turkeys will cost. Target first, Lucky second, and then a gift card for the turkey if we do not have enough of them for all the boxes.

Good of the Pride, Any Lion -

Leslye/Project Linus: Project Linus certificate of appreciation given to Leslye and Al will archive.

Eli/Crab Feed: Carl and Jenni moving on a Crab Feed plan that they are going to bring up soon, involving take out from the Fish Market. Possibly we are the “Door Dash” with a complimentary bottle of wine is one idea.

Al/Chamber of Commerce: Cupertino De Anza Lions Club Chamber of Commerce member certificate. The name is stated wrong so Al will clear that up.

Claire/Perpetual Fund: Any updates on the perpetual fund situation? Al had sent out some emails about it to the board so he is looking for responses from the board as to how much risk we want to put in these funds. The market is very in flux with political turmoil and COVID. Al has done a good job of finding a safe and secure fund. Claire knows a friend who is a financial advisor and he could come to the next board meeting to give us any advice, if we wanted. Right now it’s in a stable, easy to manage, low maintenance fund, but do we want to diversify with some of it? Al sent an email to the board on October 30th about one of the funds.

Lion Jill/Student Speaker Packet: The packet has arrived to Jill and she will let Dagi and Ray know.

Lion Jeff/December PM Meeting: Zoom Holiday Ugly Sweater Party instead.  Saturday the 5th, at 5:00, in place of missing our holiday party this year.

Good of the Order –

Lion Ray said there will be no meeting on Thanksgiving Day. Our next A.M. meeting will be December 3rd.

Lion Ray said that we are going to have a Zoom P.M. meeting on December 5th and Lion Jeff will send out the notification.

Lion Steve said that he and Ellen were going up to Camp Via West to work on the train set.

Lions Eye Foundation – Lion John Smith gave us a briefing on what the Lions Eye Foundation does for our community. Lion John said that The Lions Eye Foundation of California-Nevada, Inc. (LEF) preserves and restores the gift of sight by providing free ophthalmic examinations, operations, and medication to the less fortunate members of our community. The foundation reaches out to the underprivileged and underserved community. Patients are screened and referred by member Lions Clubs, physicians, health clinics, nurses, and opticians. There is no cost to patients. Examinations and operations are performed by Resident Physicians at the California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) under the supervision of volunteer board-certified opthalmologists who donate their services. Member Lions Clubs pay an annual contribution to the LEF to help offset operating expenses. Lion John said the budget/expenses for the LEF is approximately $650,000 per year and the value of the services provided are approximately $4.5 million annually. Lion Al said we donate annually to the eye foundation. Lion John said they are asking for additional donations as well. Next week he will try and provide us with a video about the foundation.

Food Drive – Lion ay discussed the upcoming Food Drive and that Lion Jen had sent out a revised list of the non-perishable food items that we need to get. Lion Ray said that we will have to purchase the Turkey’s on Monday morning. Lion Steve and Ellen said they had contacted the Lucky’s store on El Camino about purchasing the turkey’s and they will let us know Monday what kind of deal they can give us. They are contacting other stores to see if we can get a better price. Lion Leslye said we would be using her garage to do the set up of the boxes and food items on Saturday and Sunday. Lion Ron will check storage to see what we have as far as boxes and tape. Lion Leslye said she would need twelve tables for the food drive set up. Lion Al said we had already received $562 in donations. Lion Al also mentioned that Lion Jim Gould dropped off a check for the food drive, thank you Lion Jim. There will be a Zoom Food Drive meeting Monday November 16th at 7:30 PM for any one that would like to join in.

Lion’s News Letter – Lion Leslye said that she sent out a copy of the Lions news letter that she had created and asked for comments and other events of interest for the next news letter that she will do quarterly. Lion John Smith said that was a great idea for the club and it may help get new members. Lion Prez Jeff will look into providing it to the District so they can post it for other clubs to see.

Camp Via West Garden – Lion Joan wanted to thank all of those that attended the open house/picnic on Saturday at the camp to see what we have accomplished.

Lion Steve talked about the work going on with the train set that he is putting up for the children. Lion Steve and Ellen installed 40 brackets for the train set and he said he had talked with Rick and Rick said he could provide a table saw when we need it for the plywood. Lion Steve will. Need help when he is ready to install the base for the train set.

Good of the Order –

Lion Leslye said she received an email from her friend Sharon from Project Linus and wanted to Thank the Lions who were a part in reaching this awesome milestone. Project Linus has provided in the last 18 years – 100,000 blankets given to 100,000 children in need, providing comfort and support.  Lion Leslye said in our efforts over the last ten years we have provided between 500-700 blankets for this worthy effort.

Cupertino DeAnza Lions Charities, Inc. Lions Club of DeAnza Corporation AM ZOOM Meeting Minutes 11/5/2020
Lions Present at Zoom Video Conference: Lion’s Ray, Ron, Al, Steve, Eli, Mort, Leslye, Joan, Don, Dagi, Linda, and Herb.
Dates to Remember –
– Social Picnic at Camp Via West Saturday Nov. 7, 2020 from 11:30 -1:30
– Thanksgiving Food Drive November 21-23
– Charity Crab Feed 2021 (might be modified due to
Covid).
– Annual Golf Tournament June 26, 2021 – Ride4Diabetes will be scheduled in 2021
PM Meeting review –
• ROV (Registrar of Voters) Lion Al said him and Barbara worked 2 days and made 4 deliveries.
Lion Steve and Ellen were there until 7 PM one day. Lion Joan was told by the ROV site leader that he “hopes they are bored”, which means the ROV was properly re- sourced and it was an uneventful event.
Lion Dagi said her location was closed one day because of a virus scare. Lion Dagi and Lion Herb picked up approx- imately 150 votes on Saturday and 100 on Sunday.

Camp Via West – Lion Joan talked about “The Green House” at the Via West Campus. Lion Joan said it is a never-ending job. We have some things growing / produc- ing (cucumbers). The Green house is proving good to start plants in and then move them to the garden. Pests can be an issue and the watering system takes tinkering [sic]. We have parts and pieces to improve the watering system in the green house.
The Open House event is outside and people can space out and wear masks. Great Covid-era activity. Sign up for this Saturday November 7th from 11:30 – 1:30. The Camp Via West board members have done a tour. Hoping for a Summer opening but they need +/- 3 months to hire and train people. Likely will open in the Fall.
Two goals: Farm to table is the primary goal. Campers learn about ecology and where food comes from and do activities (harvest, etc.). Teaching opportunity is the other opportunity. Lion Joan said she has a list of one-off projects which she send out to the club for individuals to sign up for.
Thanksgiving Food Drive 2020 – COVID Style – Lion Claire had an ad hoc meeting to discuss running the food drive on Monday night and talked what would we be collecting and distributing, etc. They came up with the framework of trying to serve the ‘normal’ families. We can’t really collect in the nor- mal fashion due to Covid, but considering community based donations where we reach out to our own networks (Nextdoor, churches, etc.) to collect and drop them off at your home. We might also ask members to approach grocery stores and ask them for donations.
The regular boxes we do would just be too much, so we are go- ing to cut out many items (i.e.: perishables, rice, etc.). We could also ask for cash (to then go to inexpensive grocery stores and purchase items). Sponsoring a family may be another interest- ing approach. Lion Claire will send out a plan / approach to the club in the next day or so. They are in the process of setting up Venmo for donations.

Good of the Pride –
• Lion Leslye submitted a draft of our newsletter to Lion Prez Jeff. Looks great! We will probably send it out quarterly. Lion John Smith recommended we enter it in the district bulletin competition. Jeff to write a “president’s post”. Al said we should start out with Volume 1; Issue 1.
• Lion Steve and Ellen and went to Via Camp West. He will use Wingets for mounting things on the walls. The Camp Via West board members walked through and liked what he was doing.
• Lion Al did some research on our finances. We generate about $1300 / yr through happy dollars, etc., which equates to about 30 dollars / member. Just based on that discussion Lion Steve sent a $30 check to Lion Al. If you want to send money to Lion Al to help fund the tailtwister fund, etc.
• Lion Al said our charity fund checks will be sent out tomor- row.
• Lion Eli said the Lions had a good turnout of Lions at the Bob Gustofson memorial. Bob was a big supporter of the Li- ons Golf tournament.
